The Royal Castle in Warsaw served as the residence of Polish kings and the meeting place of the Sejm (Parliament) of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth until 1795. From 1918 to 1939, it was inhabited and used by the Presidents of the Republic of Poland. Completely destroyed by the Germans during World War II, it was rebuilt by the will of the Polish people between 1971 and 1984. Currently, the castle is a leading cultural institution, a museum open to the general public, visited by over 2 million people annually, and a venue for important state ceremonies.
